Yaktrax VS Microspikes which one should you buy?

This post compares Yaktrax vs Microspikes and helps you decide which one is the best option for you to buy! Yaktrax are great for soft snowy surfaces, but they can’t be used on hard surfaces like ice. The Kahtoola Microspikes offer traction in both slippery conditions on ice and snow, so it depends on what you’re looking for when deciding which device is better for your needs.

This Yaktrax vs Microspikes article provides information about how each of these products function, as well as some key differences between them that will help you make an informed decision about which one might work best for your winter adventures!

What are Kahtoola Microspikes?

Kahtoola Microspikes are an attachable traction device easily attach underneath your boot. Usually people use microspikes on their hiking boots but they can also be worn underneath a stiff trail running shoe.

Most people use the Kahtoola microspikes when they go for long walks on snowy roads or relatively flat mountain paths. With their 12 stainless steel 3/8″ spikes they offer great grip even on rough, rocky surfaces. The 3/8″ spikes make the Microspikes also more suitable for walking on ice compared to the “spike-less” Yaktrax traction device.

When to use Microspikes

  • On popular snow cover trails where the people have packed down the snow and the surface is now hard and icy.
  • When the conditions of the trail are uncertain. It’s never a bad idea to just toss them in your back for when the weather changes.
  • These spikes are ideal for rocky terrain where the snow is melting or there is not much left besides some ice patches.

For steep mountainous terrain we don’t recommend you use microspikes. Instead, you should opt for a good pair of crampons with longer spikes. This ensures more security in dangerous alpine environment.

What are Yaktrex, and are they worth the money?

Yaktrex can be described as the little brother of the Kahtoola Microspikes. They offer less grip and are pretty much useless on pure ice and other hard surfaces. However, they are still a good option if you are just looking for a decent attachable traction device on a budget.

With their 1.2mm steel coils, light snow and slippery forest roads will be no competition for the Yaktrax. They are more lightweight than the Microspikes and this is the reason they are a favourite for many trail runners.

When to use Yaktrax

  • Yaktrax are great for paved roads when there is a slight bit of snow on them or you might expect snow to fall later that day.
  • They are great for trail running on flat terrain when the ground is starting to get icy.
  • Also for light snow on forrest terrain they will do an amazing job at not letting you slip out.

Since the Yaktrax are a lot cheaper compared to the microspikes we consider them a great option if you are looking for a day to day traction device. In case you are looking to do long hikes or you plan to walk on pure ice the Microspikes will be best for you.

The Yaktrax are also available and the best place to buy them is on Amazon.
